Celebrate the most haunting season of the year with New York Times bestselling author, historian of medicine, and Illinois Wesleyan alumna Dr. Lindsey Fitzharris ‘04. Join us for her talk History in the Flesh: Pain, Patients, and the Price of Progress, followed by a book signing.

Drawing on all three of her books - The Butchering Art, The Facemaker, and Sleuth-Hound - Fitzharris takes the audience into the operating theatres, battlefield hospitals, and forensic investigations that helped shape modern medicine. But this is not simply a celebration of breakthroughs and brilliant innovators. It is a story of the people whose suffering underwrote every gain. In bearing witness to their lives, Fitzharris reminds us that medical history is not only about how we learned to heal, but also about those who paid the price while we were still learning.
